Known musically for his work with blues rockers Section 10 and a localised solo rock career, Ian Collins of Collins Fisher Peters has now fully indulged his passion for synthesisers to provide one third of a slow-burning and meditative instrumental album, Moon. Comprised of three cosmically drifting tracks, ‘Nova’, ‘Black Moondog’ and ‘Moon’, the title track being 22 minutes long, the released is self-described as ‘music for the cans’, and ‘inner landscapes like soundscapes to inner space’. Moon can be seen as loosely fitting into the ‘New Age’ genre through associating core themes of relaxation and imagination with subdued, subtle musical flourishes of Spanish classical guitar, echoing snare, hypnotic drumming, dark jazzy brass tones, mantric bass and expansive synth. Section 10’s Eddie Fisher fulfils drum kit duties while Soundshed Music Productions’ Stewart Peters lends guitar and synthetic percussion, additionally completing recording, mixing and mastering.
If one chooses to, any listener’s inspired mental landscapes can adapt to the transformative reach of this music to rise with a climax or unfurl to an interpretive swelling passage. Improvisational and vibrant, yet oddly soothing.
