Blasting the Past - blog post image

Blasting the Past

Bringing Katoomba together in the name of rockabilly, Haze interviewed the music-makers themselves, Danny Wegrzyn and Reverend Horton Heat’s buddy Pat Capocci after they had each played a triple set of Elvis, Carl Perkins and originals, featuring Luke from The Preatures on drums!

Questioned on the enduring power of their genre, now 60+ years old, Capocci tells us that good tasteful music, played with the right attitude, always draws a crowd and cuts through any negativity. Wegrzyn states that “it all lies in the beat”.

Cherry Picked 50s

MC/DJ extrordanaire (and Mike Patton affiliate) Jay Katz tells us that foot stomping is good, but one of the main attractions is partner dancing, unting young and old.

The best thing about Lady Luck for Jay Katz is the cherry-picked favourite aspects of 50s culture on display for stylish fun. Everything in good taste.

On the Carrington Steps, charities such as Pinups With A Cause and The Black Dog Institute raised funds for PTSD and depression, respectively.Rolling Records, the record-store van, was there too!

Inside the Carrington Library, The Boogie Bop Dames provided glamorous vintage do’s ‘n’ dresses for women by women, plus stylish makeovers for men and children.

Miss Pinup Australia

Miss Pixie, senior-hairdresser and Director of the heritage-listed Miss Pinup Australia group explained that pin-ups and kustom culture have only been in Oz for 10 years, but have already empowered many folks to feel beautiful/handsome in their own skin, through vintage glamour and class. The hot-rods, low-riders, and rat-rods on Katoomba St turned heads all day before the Ball kept the kats swingin’ till the early morn… Goodness gracious, great balls of fire!
