Learning To Fly - Celebrating the music of Tom Petty

From the guys who brought you 'Life On Mars', 'Get Yer Ya-Yas Out', and 'Beatlefest' presents... Learning To Fly - Celebrating the life and music of Tom Petty at The Hotel Gearin on Sat 25th November, from 8.30pm.

For one night only, the Blue Mountains music community will be coming together to share and celebrate the life and music of the late Tom Petty.

Arguably, one of the most influential artists of the 70’s and 80’s and possibly of all time, Thomas Earl Petty (October 20, 1950 – October 2, 2017) collaborated with greats like Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison & Jeff Lynne in George Harrison's group, The Traveling Wilbury's. His first duet ‘insider’ was sung alongside none other than the sensational Stevie Nicks who he went on to form a close friendship, collaborating again with Stevie’s massive hit ‘Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around’.

As the frontman of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Petty along with fellow band members; Mike Campbell, Benmont Tench, Ron Blair, Scott Thurston & Steve Ferrone gave the world a series of Americana hits including favourites; ‘Runnin’ Down A Dream’, ‘Learning to Fly’, ‘Mary Jane’s Last Dance’ and ‘American Girl’.

In his solo career, Petty soared to new heights with his debut album ‘Full Moon Fever’ (1989) which featured the fresh hits ‘Free Fallin’’ and ‘I Won’t Back Down’. Free Fallin’, the opening track of the album, became one of Petty’s most famous tracks. The song fuelled one of cinema’s most iconic Hollywood moments, with Tom Cruise victoriously belting out the tune while driving in the film Jerry Macguire back in 1996. Free Fallin’ was also Petty’s longest-charting hit, peaking at #7 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart in 1990.

In his career with the Heartbreakers and as a solo artist, Pett sold more than 80 million records worldwide, becoming one of the best-selling music artists of all time and an honourable inductee of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
