Currently involved in relocation to a residential performance space in South Katoomba, the underground acoustic scene at Katoomba Social Club is staying free and relaxed after a recent night of ‘primitive folk music’ on May 15. Featuring a solo set from Darren Cross, a founding member of alternative 90s trio Gerling, who was also fundraising for his second solo LP, the latest KSC focused on an intimate retro vibe; stripped-down and rustic. Chatting to HAZE as organiser and co-manager of the KSC, musician Jon Flood confirmed this element of nostalgia, in a live setting placed halfway between a house party and a pub gig. Bidding their inevitable farewell to The Kiosk down near Katoomba Falls/Echo Point, the next KSC will take place on 38 Neale St, (The Great Northern Hotel), with posters to be slapped up soon. Artists already involved in the lineup are Max S. Porter and Darks Common Underground, with debut appearances from folk projects Moon & Flood and Only The Lonely. There are also plans for shows in Blackheath, promoting this new cult-folk following as talked about from Katoomba to Sydney. Audiences have already travelled up from the city to experience the Katoomba Social Club, so it’s interesting to consider where things might go next.
