Film Review: Chicken People (2016)

Star Rating

★★★★☆

Genre: Documentary

Nicole Lucas Haim’s debut movie about poultry breeding shows in the United States is a light hearted, attention grabbing and a far deeper documentary than the poster and the tagline suggest.

In this documentary, the story follows 3 different breeders: Shari McCullough, Brian Caraker and Brian Knox, over the course of a year and their mission to breed, maintain, groom and perfect their fowls so they can compete at national shows and win the particular crowns in the different events, especially the main one at the Ohio National Poultry Show, but as the documentary progresses, the director’s subjects reveal more and more about themselves in their passions, life outside the shows (for example Brian Knox is a Mechanic for Drag Racing), and the true love for their chickens, which could be said that they are the breeder’s form of escape and redemption.

This heartfelt, quirky filled humour and near flawless documentary is not quite as it seems at the beginning but it is a worthwhile piece of art that attracts the human emotion of love towards pets, or in this case ‘their family. There can be a slight similarity to the ‘Chef’s Table’ documentary series on Netflix [jokes aside] as both tend to delve into the subject’s history and passions and desires to perfect their professions.

Viewers whom like documentaries should check this one out, even the ones whom don’t like the genre should watch, as it is a rewarding experience.

Now Showing at Mt. Vic Flicks.
