Film Review: The Hitman’s Bodyguard

Star Rating

★★★★☆

Genre: Action/Black Comedy

Two years after a routine job ends in disastrous consequences, Triple-A protection agent Michael Bryce (Ryan Reynolds) is now a mere second-class bodyguard whom is more than eager to prove his worth to get back up to the high class again, which soon comes in the form of escorting international assassin Darius Kincaid (Samuel L. Jackson) from Manchester to Hague so he can testify against Vladislav Dukhovich (Gary Oldman) a tyrannical Belarusian dictator for war crimes at the International Court of Justice, but other players want to prevent Kincaid’s appearance.

There is no denying that Reynolds and Jackson’s chemistry works well here as both have had prior experience in the protection roles, Jackson in 2004’s ‘S.W.A.T.’ and Reynolds in 2012’s ‘Safe House’ respectively, and the two bounce of each other quite well in this rockling action packed movie that keeps the audience entertained. Patrick Hughes’ experience with action comedy in ‘The Expendables 3’ (2014) and serious action drama in ‘Red Hill’ (2010) is evident in this movie as a whole since both genres coincide with each other in this film.

Definitely recommended for an compelling night out at the movies.

Fun Fact: This movie was originally written to be a serious action/drama but after several drafts of the script, the makers made the story as an action comedy, but the seriousness elements of the original script have been kept in.

Watch if you liked: 16 Blocks (2006. Dir. Richard Donner), S.W.A.T. (2004. Dir. Clark Johnson), Midnight Run (1988. Dir. Martin Brest), Safe House (2012. Dir. Daniel Espinosa), Fled (1995. Dir. Kevin Hooks) & Red Hill (2010. Dir. Patrick Hughes.

Now Showing at Hoyts Cinemas.
