New Public Art Commission

Through a generous donation from the late William Scrymgeour Tatlow, the Blue Mountains Cultural Centre has achieved the long-awaited goal of commissioning a site-specific sculpture for its central courtyard.

From artist proposal submissions held back in February 2017, renowned sculptor Koichi Ishino was selected to complete his work, titled ‘Wind, Stone – Earth and Sky’ – now on public display at the Cultural Centre’s central courtyard.

The sculpture is constructed from stainless steel and black granite in Ishino's trademark process of bonding the two materials with original inlay techniques. These techniques result in surfaces that morph from stone to steel across perfectly flat planes in a seemingly impossible junction. The mirrored stainless steel reflects the ever-changing skyscape and contrasts with the solidity of the black granite, grounding the sculpture to the earth.

Wind, Stone – Earth and Sky has been designed to both reflect the changing elements of the Blue Mountains and reference the relationship between the mountains and the sky.

Ishino’s work, Wind, Stone – Earth and Sky is the 6th public art commission from the Cultural Centre.
