Originate: Apply now to Audition for Q Theatre's Young Artist Project

Whether you're an actor, writer, musician, digital artist or spoken word poet, Q Theatre's Studio Q is on the hunt for people with a hunger for making live art. Auditions for 12 young artists, aged 18 – 26, to take part in the 2019 'Originate' performance project will be held in early May with the project kicking off later that same month.

Originate is an opportunity to create a show from the ground up in a supportive environment. The end result gets presented in the Allan Mullins Studio at The Joan to a public audience across a three night season. The project up-skills early-career artists in the areas of new work development, cross art form practice and facilitates new collaborations.

The successful applicants will form into an ensemble of emerging artists to create a new show about the here and now. Guided by director Margaret Davis, the group will move through a workshop process that dreams a new performance from scratch. 'Originate' is a holding title for a performance that is yet to be developed and will be defined by the thoughts, beliefs, hopes and fears of the ensemble.

In 2019, for the first time Originate will be bringing in a resident scientist to support the ensemble to develop a new work that fuses creative practice with scientific inquiry.

"Our Originate project has a strong history of fostering a new wave of up and coming theatre makers," said Q Theatre's Project Director Nick Atkins.
"Originate alumni have included Will Tredinnick who went on to present a work as a part of our Sydney Fringe Q Indie season and Adelaide Fringe, picking up NIDA's Best Emerging Artist award. Similarly Bernadette Fam was part of last year's Originate and has since been awarded Create NSW's 2018 Young Creative Leaders Fellowship," he said.

Applications close Monday 29 April with Auditions taking place on Sunday 5 and Monday 6 May. To apply head to https://www.thejoan.com.au/originate-audition-call-out/.
