In a celebration of the great tradition of patronage, and Penrith Regional Gallery’s Autumn Exhibition - ‘5 x 5 The Artist and the Patron’, Penrith Regional Gallery & Lewers Bequest invites you to a free public forum this Sunday afternoon (May 6th 2-4pm).
Join Edmund Capon AM OBEformer Director of the Art Gallery NSW, and collector and artist panelists -Dr Dick Quan, Lisa Paulsen and Julian Meagher -who talk about their own personalcollections, the driving forces and impulses of their collecting practices, and the artwork they love.
Once the privilege and duty of the great and powerful; kings, queens, emperors and the Church, ‘the art of collecting art’ in current times is a lot different to what is has been in the past. Sunday’s forum is the perfect platform for minds curious, who have been wanting to buy or collect art but aren’t exactly sure where to start.
At this special forum, hear the thoughts of collectors as they discuss their relationships with artists, gallerists, and their decisions to buy and display in their private homes. Hear about these wonderful, quirky, idiosyncratic collections, the affinity they share with particular artists, and hear about mistakes that are made along the journey of collecting.
If you are keen to start your own collection; make a start by listening to the experts. Take art consultant Amanda Love’s advice and ‘through time and visiting art galleries and exhibitions, train and develop an ‘eye’ for art …and enjoy the relationship you can have with it that is free, just by looking. You can look at the world of art displayed in museums for nothing’.
Remember, your first collection piece 'doesn’t have to break the bank' and can be purchased from so many different sources – galleries, markets, directly from the artist, art consultancies or may even be a loan!
Enjoy an afternoon of insight into the world of art collecting at Penrith Regional Gallery & The Lewers Bequest. While there, discover Hahan’s sculptures, Trinity that tell the story behind the complex interactions of the Indonesian art market through three central figures: the curator, the artist and the collector – see if you can pick who is who.
