Step into a world of thoughtful-provoking abstract paintings with ‘Inside yesterdays and the threshold of tomorrows’ – emerging artist Pip Beauvoir’s first solo exhibition.
“Now I know that I have to paint, that is what makes me happy and I feel so myself” – says Pip Beauvoir who has always known she wanted to be an artist.
Inside yesterdays and the threshold of tomorrows is a heartfelt autobiographical show, intense and equally rich in colour and gesture. Beauvoir constructs many layers of oil paint in her expressive abstract style, often then scratching back into layers revealing colours like memories.
Pip describes her paintings as a form of poetry, having previously studied English literature and teaching at university. “In my painting I am trying to grasp and explain the ambiguities and emotions of life and I hope that this will resonate with viewers”.
Using fingers, palette knives and the occasional ‘uncared’ for brush, Pip’s style is a mixture of strong and bold gestures mixed with fragility. “I want my process to be as free as possible. I need to be really in the moment and feel the colours when I am painting. It is very intuitive,” she adds.
Working from her home studio in the Blue Mountains, she finally has the space and freedom to create. Seeing her first Rothko painting in Brussels at age 19, three weeks after her father had died, Pip says she “knew the power of colour to convey emotions that were otherwise unexplainable”.
